There are a good many companies called Saffron. As far as we can tell, not one of them has ever explained why. This is our answer, and it is the whole argument for how we build.
Canon II · The Spice
The most precious spice on earth, because a machine cannot touch it.
Saffron is the crimson stigma of the Crocus sativus. There are three threads in each flower. They open for a matter of days, they must be picked at dawn before the sun opens the bloom, and they have to be drawn from the heart of the flower by hand, by fingers that know, without being told, how much pressure the thread will take before it tears.
Every shortcut ever invented has been tried on that harvest. None of them worked. Not because nobody was clever enough, but because the task is made of judgment, and judgment has never been the sort of thing you can bolt to a frame and run overnight.
So the resistance is not a flaw in saffron. The resistance is the reason it is worth anything at all. Take the hand out and you do not get cheaper saffron. You get no saffron.
Canon V · The Standard
We are an engineering house first. The range is the point.
A vow about the human hand is worth nothing from a company that cannot build. So, plainly, what is actually operated here, ordinary through to unprecedented:
Most of the work that reaches us reaches us because it has no precedent. That is a claim about what walks in the door, and it is the only kind of claim about range we are willing to make. The standard we hold is simple and checkable: we publish the worst run, including our own, and we put the fee behind the number.

We do not build systems that replace people. We build systems that replace the work.
This is a real distinction and we hold it strictly, because it happens to be both the honest description and the better engineering.
Nobody became an accountant in order to do the reconciliation, the categorisation, the month‑end close and the invoice chasing at eleven at night. They became an accountant for the judgment, for knowing which number is wrong before they can say why. The first list is work. The second is a person. We automate the first so there is more room for the second, and we have never once shipped a system whose selling point was that somebody could be let go.
